Pebble Tec vs Pebble Sheen: Same Price, Different Feel — Which Is Right for Your Phoenix Pool?

If you're resurfacing your pool in Phoenix, you've probably narrowed it down to two finishes: Pebble Tec and Pebble Sheen. Both are made by the same manufacturer (Pebble Technology International), both hold up well in Arizona's intense heat and hard water, and both cost the same — typically $10,000 to $14,000 installed for a standard residential pool. The difference comes down to texture and feel underfoot. Our sister company Cal Plastering was the first to ever shoot Pebble Tec, and our crews trained applicators across the nation — here's what that experience plus 69 years of pool resurfacing in Phoenix has taught us.
What Is Pebble Tec?
Pebble Tec is the original pebble pool finish from Pebble Technology International. It uses larger natural stone aggregates that are exposed after application, creating a textured, natural-looking surface with visible pebbles. The stones range from about the size of a lentil to a small pea, and you can feel them distinctly under your feet when walking on the pool floor or steps.
Pebble Tec comes in dozens of color blends — from light sandy tones to deep blues and greens. The exposed aggregate catches light differently throughout the day, giving your pool water a rich, dynamic color that plain plaster can't match. Lifespan is 15 to 25 years with proper water chemistry, which is significantly longer than traditional white plaster (10 to 15 years).
What Is Pebble Sheen?
Pebble Sheen is Pebble Tec's smoother cousin — same manufacturer, same durability, same warranty, same price. The difference is in the aggregate size. Pebble Sheen uses much finer pebbles blended with a cement coating that creates a smoother, slightly glossy surface. You still get the natural stone look in the water, but underfoot it feels closer to fine sandpaper than loose gravel.
Pebble Sheen also comes in a wide range of color options. Because the finer aggregate reflects light more uniformly, the water color tends to look more consistent compared to the dappled effect you get with Pebble Tec. Same 15- to 25-year lifespan.
Pebble Tec vs Pebble Sheen: The Real Differences
Since the price is identical at $10,000 to $14,000 installed in Phoenix, the decision comes down to personal preference across a few key factors:
Texture and Comfort: This is the biggest difference. Pebble Tec has a noticeably rougher texture — some homeowners love the grip it provides, especially on steps and the shallow end. Others find it too abrasive on bare feet, particularly for kids who spend hours in the pool. Pebble Sheen is significantly smoother. Most of our customers who prioritize comfort choose Pebble Sheen, and it's the finish we recommend more often for families with young children.
Appearance: Pebble Tec has a more dramatic, natural stone look with visible pebble detail. Pebble Sheen has a more refined, uniform appearance with a subtle shimmer. Both look great — it depends on whether you prefer a rustic or polished aesthetic.
Durability: Identical. Both finishes use the same bonding technology and carry the same manufacturer warranty. Both resist Arizona's hard water, UV exposure, and temperature swings equally well. Both last 15 to 25 years.
Maintenance: Virtually the same. Both require proper water chemistry (pH 7.2–7.6, calcium hardness 200–400 ppm) and regular brushing. Pebble Tec's rougher surface can trap slightly more algae in the texture, but with normal pool maintenance this isn't a meaningful difference.
Staining Resistance: Equal. Both finishes resist chemical staining and etching at the same level. Arizona's hard water (often 400+ ppm calcium) is the biggest threat to any pool surface, and both Pebble Tec and Pebble Sheen handle it well when water chemistry is maintained.
Which Finish Do We Recommend?
We don't just install Pebble Tec and Pebble Sheen — our family helped bring it to the industry. When traditional pool plaster lost asbestos from its formula, it lost its strength, and the entire pool resurfacing industry faced an identity crisis. Gordon Schmeiser, who ran our sister company Cal Plastering, went to Australia to evaluate a pebble aggregate finish that would become the solution. Cal Plastering became the first contractor to shoot Pebble Tec in Scottsdale, Arizona, and our crews went on to train applicators across the nation on how to trowel and apply it properly. That hands-on expertise has been passed down through three generations. After nearly seven decades of resurfacing pools across the Phoenix Valley, we lean toward Pebble Sheen for most homeowners. The smoother feel is more comfortable for bare feet, especially for families with kids, and it still delivers the beautiful natural stone appearance that makes pebble finishes so popular. That said, Pebble Tec is a great choice if you prefer a more textured grip or want that bold, natural aggregate look.
The best way to decide is to feel sample panels in person. We bring finish samples to every estimate so you can touch both surfaces and see the color options against your pool's shape and surroundings.

Maintenance | Regular brushing; rougher surface can trap slightly more algae | Regular brushing; smoother surface resists algae slightly better | Regular brushing; fortified cement resists chemical deterioration better than standard plaster | Weekly brushing required; porous surface stains more easily and needs closer chemistry monitoring |
Best For | Textured grip and rustic natural stone aesthetic | Comfort-first families who want a polished, refined look | Durability upgrade over plaster at a mid-range price with a smooth, refined finish | Budget-friendly upfront choice for a traditional pool look |
What About White Plaster or Other Finishes?
If the $10,000 to $14,000 price point for Pebble Tec or Pebble Sheen is above your budget, traditional white plaster runs $6,500 to $9,000 in the Phoenix area. Plaster gives you a clean, classic white pool look and lasts 10 to 15 years — shorter than pebble finishes but still a solid choice, especially if you plan to sell the home within a decade. We also install Ultra Poz, a premium cement-based finish that falls between plaster and pebble in both texture and price.
